Aside from work, I delved into exploring Belgium. I biked through charming cities, indulged in Belgian cuisine, and reveled in cultural festivals. Mechelen, where I lived temporarily, captured my heart with its idyllic charm and aesthetic.

Meril from Estonia
Coloured Glasses project during the summer of 2023
Hello,
I'm Meril, and I'm from Estonia. I had the amazing opportunity to be part of a European Solidarity Corps project in Belgium from May to August 2023. I worked with YFU Flanders, an organization primarily focused on cultural exchange programs with an educational purpose. As a Coloured Glasses intern, my main responsibilities involved facilitating and organizing cultural awareness workshops, training new facilitators, and handling marketing for YFU Flanders. These workshops, held mainly in schools, were emotionally moving and enriching experiences, shedding light on crucial social issues such as discrimination and homophobia through informal educational methods.
Additionally, since it was summer and schools were mostly closed, I had the chance to engage in other activities, including marketing and more. For my personal ESC project, I created a podcast called “THE PURPLE PRESS PODCAST,” aimed at spreading a global citizen mentality and providing insights into exchange years, living abroad, becoming a host family, and volunteering.
I explored cities like Antwerp, Ostende, and Brussels, visited museums, and attended events. Participating in a Belgian folk dance class was unforgettable, adding to my cultural experience.
Thanks to an introductory seminar organized by ESC, I made friends from Spain and Georgia, with whom I've remained connected. I've even visited them in their countries. Additionally, I found lifelong friends among fellow interns from the office.
Being part of the team at YFU Flanders was fantastic. They were supportive and encouraging, offering numerous opportunities for self-realization. We even had "team days" where we went out to eat or to an escape room, fostering a strong sense of camaraderie.
One memorable event we organized was the "come and go picnic," expressing gratitude to the volunteers. It was a delightful way to celebrate their hard work and dedication while strengthening the sense of community within the project.
Creating "THE PURPLE PRESS PODCAST" was a highlight of my experience. It aimed to promote global citizenship and provide insights into exchange years, living abroad, and volunteering. It was fulfilling.
Biking was a favorite activity, given its popularity in Belgium. I explored numerous cities, rode along the Belgian coastline, and even ventured to nearby countries like the Netherlands and Germany. Belgium's renowned fries, chocolate, waffles, beer, and festivals added to the richness of my experience.
Moreover, my time in Belgium significantly broadened my career horizons, particularly in the realm of international organizations. It equipped me with valuable skills, insights, and connections that will undoubtedly shape my future endeavors.
In essence, my experience in Belgium through the European Solidarity Corps was both enriching and transformative, paving the way for personal and professional growth, and opening new doors of opportunity in my life journey.
Best regards,
Meril Kiskonen
